    I liked this last installment as it finally gets to the heart of the issue. It would be nice to get some relative assessments of pricing versus conventional high Seer two speed outdoor with variable speed indoor units in the 3 to 5 ton residential range. It would also be interesting to know if the VRF Branch Controllers are needed for the typical residential S models when used with 2 to 4 indoor units. It seems the Branch Controllers add a significant cost that is not directly comparable to conventional systems, even forced air zoning.

  • rj – good questions. First the easy one – branch controllers are not used w S-series equip. As to pricing, there are so many variables that it can be dicey to give a straight answer. VRF can be anywhere from cost neutral (in 1:1 systems) to twice as much (in systems w/ multiple ducted indoor air handlers). That assumes your local market has some minimal level of VRF penetration/sales. Here in Austin a typical VRF bid is 35-50% more. Note that VRF bids typically assumes higher end installation overall, including metal plenums, reducing trunk lines, and high quality diffusers.
