Supplemental Stand-alone Dehumidification Install & Review Video

I’ve been talking about this need for a stand-alone dehumidifier for our Hot/Humid climate and I’ve finally installed my first one in a very high performance home I just completed in West Lake.  This house was built to the 5 Star standard of the Austin Energy Green Building Program and we achieved major milestone of over 900 sq feet of house per ton of A/C.  This is a very tight, efficient home that should perform at very high levels of efficiency for many decades.  In this video I’ll show you what the install of the Dehumidifier looks like in the attic.  The equipment we used is a Therma-Stor Ultra-Aire XT150H rated at 150 pints of water removed using only 6.9 amps of power.  This is an amazing unit and I’m excited to show it off.

  • Matt, thanks for this really great posting. One quick question: if the AC is off, but the humidifier needs to run, will it turn on the main furnace blower or is there a small blower in the humidifier itself to circulate air through it?

  • @jwcates3: The dehum has a fresh air input pipe linked to it that’s set for 10 minutes of fresh air per hour. When that fresh air pipe is open then the furnace fan kicks on for that 10 minute time. When the dehum is running it can push through the April Aire filter. Great question. Matt Risinger

  • Matt…you have two HVAC units in the house? Do you have two dehumidifiers? If not is it not necessary to have two dehumidifiers (1 to each unit) Im confused. I am building a house (3000 sqft) with two units (1-1.5 and 1-2 ton) and want to use the XT150 but I am not sure if I need 1 or two? Any advice. Thank you.

  • @brentisaacks: Yes this is a two HVAC zoned house of about 3500sf. The XT150 Dehumidifier can easily handle the whole house using only one unit. This Dehum is rated at 150 pints of water removal per day so it’s got lots of capacity and the big benefit is that it runs much more efficiently than an AC unit.
For your house if approx 3000sf, one unit can easily handle the whole house. Thanks for your comment. Matt
