Quantum Window & Doors – Factory Tour

I’m working on a project with Austin Architect Hugh Jefferson Randolph,AIA and we’re using a brand of window that I’ve not used before.  Quantum Windows & Doors out of Seattle WA.  If you’ve ever seen their ads, they obviously make a very fine Architectural product.  However, their factory tour really reinforced my image of them being a premium product with the finest craftsmanship.  I’ve got a large package of their windows and sliding glass doors on order for my project and I can’t wait to get them!  I’ll do a full review later this year.

Quantum was founded 30 years ago by a builder who wanted a particular species of wood window for his houses but found the choices in the marketplace limited.

It’s obvious that this company was founded by a craftsman from your first step into their facility.  All their woods arrive kild dried and ready for milling.

After the rough lumber is milled they have a team of craftsmen ready to assemble their custom windows and doors to very exacting Shop Drawings produced by their staff in conjunction with the house’s Architect.

Reminded me of my favorite Austin millwork shop. The Quantum factory is very much like a custom Cabinet makers shop. Craftsmen following exact plans and each piece is different.

The windows for my project aren’t in production yet, but they were making some of the Lift/Slide White Oak sliding doors for my Austin project!

Another impressive part of their operation is their finishing department.

They take great pains to fill and sand precisely before the products hit their spray booth.

For many years Quantum only offered non-clad windows but within the last 10 years they felt like they needed to offer an aluminum clad exterior to compete against the larger window brands.  I thought their cladding system was ingenious.  They totally finish the wood windows first, then they add a series of “nipples” to the wood that the cladding snaps onto.  The “nipples” space the cladding off the wood by 1/4″ and leaves an air gap behind the aluminum cladding.

The white "nipples" are screwed into the wood frame then the cladding system snaps into this. It creates an air gap behind the aluminum cladding to allow drainage & drying!

Overall a very impressive organization and a product built by Craftsman.  These windows are among the finest made in America.
